My Own Private Sakura Matsuri*

In my yard lives a magnificent cherry tree. It's been there some thirty years or more -- so I suppose it has a greater claim to "my" piece of earth than I do.

Two weeks ago it flowered! And since that time, whenever a gentle breeze blows, it has blanketed my yard with its pale pink blossoms.

They look so beautiful on the ground that I'm letting my lawn go until my cherry tree deigns to shed its last petal -- an act of neglect that no doubt fills my lawn-obsessed neighbors with some consternation. So what if my lawn isn't perfectly manicured like theirs? Mine is covered in cherry blossoms! Besides, the grass is barely two inches high. :P Why the neighbors feel theirs must be mowed weekly is beyond me.

I'm not doing much more than staring at the tree in the early morning moments after I see my son off to school. Today the blossoms shown icy-pink, positively glowing, in the grey morning light. The sky was promising to rain and a warm wind carried handfuls more petals to the ground. It was dreamlike. For a moment I was in a place where I wanted to be…

…For a moment I almost forgot where I was.

* sakura matsuri = cherry blossom festival (Japanese)
